Hawks Continue to Show Grit Against Top-10 Team
Cosumnes River put together a gritty defensive effort but came up short in a 58–46 loss to No. 9 Santa Rosa on Friday night. The Hawks led after the first quarter and stayed within striking distance throughout, but a decisive second quarter swung momentum in favor of the Bear Cubs.
Cosumnes River opened the game strong, taking a 16–12 lead after the first quarter behind active defense and balanced scoring. Santa Rosa responded with a 22–4 second quarter to seize control at halftime, and despite a competitive second half, the Hawks were unable to fully close the gap.
Ariel Bailey led Cosumnes River with 12 points, knocking down two three-pointers, while Aletha Singleton added 11 points, five rebounds, and an impressive seven steals to anchor the Hawks defensively. Peyton Thorpe contributed seven points and six rebounds, and Daniela Campos provided a spark off the bench with four points on perfect shooting.
Defensively, Cosumnes River forced 24 turnovers and recorded 13 steals, consistently disrupting Santa Rosa's offensive rhythm. The Hawks also showed resilience late, outscoring the Bear Cubs 15–8 in the fourth quarter, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Despite the result, Cosumnes River showed toughness and defensive intensity against a nationally ranked opponent. The Hawks will look to build on that effort as they continue conference play.
