FOLSOM, Calif. — The Cosumnes River College softball team earned a split in a Big 8 Conference doubleheader against Folsom Lake College on April 9, highlighted by a strong opening-game victory before falling in the nightcap.
The Hawks took game one 4-3 behind a complete-game effort from Xochitl Atayde and timely hitting throughout the lineup. Cosumnes River struck early in the first inning when Imani Black launched a two-run home run to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. After Folsom Lake cut into the deficit, the Hawks responded in the fifth inning as Emma Misasi delivered an RBI double and Ashley Garcia followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1.
Folsom Lake made things interesting with a two-run fifth inning, but Atayde remained composed in the circle, finishing the game while allowing three runs on 10 hits and striking out five to secure the win. Black led the offense with two RBIs, while Garcia and Misasi each contributed a hit and an RBI in the victory.
In game two, the Falcons responded with a 15-1 win in a shortened five-inning contest. Cosumnes River opened the scoring in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Black, but Folsom Lake answered with an explosive second inning, scoring eight runs to take control of the game.
Despite collecting three hits, including a pair from Atayde, the Hawks were unable to generate sustained offense. Folsom Lake continued to add on in the third and fourth innings, capitalizing on timely hitting and drawing seven walks to extend their lead.
