SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Cosumnes River College softball delivered a strong conference showing on Friday afternoon, sweeping Diablo Valley in a Big 8 doubleheader with 3-0 and 3-2 victories to improve to 19-11 overall and 9-6 in conference play.
Game 1: Cosumnes River 3, Diablo Valley 0
Behind a dominant performance in the circle, sophomore pitcher Xochitl Atayde tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Hawks to a 3-0 win in the opener. Atayde allowed just two hits while striking out six over seven innings.
After four scoreless innings, Cosumnes River broke through in the fifth. Emily Azemar opened the scoring with an RBI single up the middle, bringing home Nina Najafizadeh, who had doubled earlier in the inning. Moments later, Faith Hahn delivered a clutch RBI triple to right-center to extend the lead to 2-0. Atayde helped her own cause with an RBI groundout to cap the three-run frame.
The Hawks finished with five hits, highlighted by Najafizadeh's double and Hahn's triple, while Azemar and Hahn each drove in a run.
Game 2: Cosumnes River 3, Diablo Valley 2
The second game proved to be a tighter contest, but the Hawks once again came out on top with a walk-off 3-2 victory.
Cosumnes River struck first in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a pair of unearned runs. Emily Azemar came through again, delivering a two-RBI single to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Diablo Valley responded in the sixth, tying the game at 2-2 on a two-RBI single from Alexis Carstens.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks answered. Emma Misasi sparked the rally with a triple, and Imani Black followed with a clutch RBI single to left-center to secure the walk-off win.
Pitcher Kaylena Ogle went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three to earn her seventh win of the season.
