The Cosumnes River College baseball team secured a key Big 8 Conference series win over No. 11 Modesto, taking two of three games highlighted by a dominant offensive performance and clutch pitching down the stretch.
The Hawks opened the series in emphatic fashion on March 17, defeating Modesto 10-6 behind a 17-hit explosion. After falling behind early, Cosumnes River responded quickly, tying the game in the first inning on a two-run home run from Brent Martin.
Trailing 6-3 in the third, the Hawks rallied once again, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Jaylen Dawson to even the score. Martin struck again in the fourth inning with his second home run of the game, a two-run shot that gave the Hawks the lead for good.
Martin finished the day with a standout performance, going 2-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Jason Alexander added three hits and an RBI, while Alan Quirarte-Guzman and Aaron Del Real each collected three hits in the win.
On the mound, Jacob Schreiber was dominant in relief, earning the win after tossing five shutout innings while allowing no hits and striking out four. Brent Martin closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
Cosumnes River continued its strong play in the series finale on March 20, earning a 6-2 victory. The Hawks manufactured runs early and pulled away late with a three-run eighth inning to seal the win.
Curtis Haggins delivered a key hit in the eighth, driving in two runs, while Tye Thompson added an RBI single. Alan Quirarte-Guzman and Brent Martin also contributed RBIs as part of a balanced offensive effort.
On the mound, Josh Painter turned in a strong outing, allowing two runs over 6.1 innings while striking out five to earn the win. Schreiber added scoreless relief, and Mason Harris closed the door to secure the save.
In between the two victories, the Hawks dropped a tightly contested 5-4 extra-inning battle on March 19. Cosumnes River erased a three-run deficit with a fifth-inning rally, highlighted by a home run from Quirarte-Guzman, and later tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single from Ryan Okino. However, Modesto walked it off in the 10th inning.
Despite the narrow loss, the Hawks showcased resilience throughout the series, combining timely hitting, depth in the lineup, and strong pitching performances.
Cosumnes River will look to carry the momentum from the series win into its next Big 8 Conference matchup.
