Don Mico enters his ninth season as head coach of the Hawks in 2026 and his 14th season overall with the program. Under Mico, Cosumnes River has experienced consistent team success while continuing to develop players for the professional and four-year college levels. Recent professional milestones under Mico include Burle Dixon being drafted by the Kansas City Royals, and TJ Czyz being drafted by the Athletics, while Judah Morris (Athletics) and Harry Owen (Atlanta Braves) went on to sign professional contracts.

In 2025, the Hawks posted a 22-18 record, reached as high as No. 11 in the state of California, and advanced to the CCCAA playoffs for a fourth straight season. Under Mico, the program has qualified for the postseason in every eligible season since 2019.

The 2024 season was highlighted by the Hawks winning six of the seven final games of the season to reach CCCAA postseason play for a third consecutive season.

In 2023, Mico guided the Hawks to another berth in the CCCAA playoffs, advancing to the Super Regionals.

Mico began his coaching career as a junior varsity assistant at Earl Wooster High School in 1992 before joining Sacramento City College as a volunteer assistant in 1994 under Jerry Weinstein and Paul Carmazzi. During his tenure at Sac City, the Panthers won back-to-back state championships in 1998 and 1999.

During that period, Mico coached numerous players who went on to earn Division I, Division II, and NAIA scholarships, as well as professional baseball contracts. Some notable players include Mike Neu (current head coach at California), Matt Riley (Baltimore Orioles/Texas Rangers), and Joe Thurston (Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies / Boston Red Sox / St. Louis Cardinals).

Mico returned to the collegiate ranks in the fall of 2011 when Tony Bloomfield hired him as a volunteer assistant. That spring, the Hawks captured the 2012 state championship. Mico assisted in all facets of the program until Bloomfield’s retirement following the 2017 season.

Mico has two sons, DJ and JD, known as Shorty. DJ is an attorney in Roseville after graduating from McGeorge School of Law. He and his wife, Hailey, have a son, Felix, Mico’s first grandson. Shorty is a former Hawks and UC Davis infielder who now works within the UC Davis Athletic Department. His soon-to-be wife, Rosie, has served as the voice of the Hawks for multiple seasons.
