CRC Men’s Basketball Coach Jonathan James Honored at Juneteenth Festival for Community Impact
Recognized for his dedication to mentorship, leadership, and community service, James was among a select group of individuals celebrated during the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Festival
ELK GROVE, Calif. – Cosumnes River College Head Men's Basketball Coach Jonathan James was recognized as a Community Impact Award Honoree during the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Festival – Black Wall Street Experience on Saturday June 13th at Old Town Plaza in Elk Grove, California.
The annual celebration, which commemorates Juneteenth and honors the rich history, culture, and achievements of the Black community, recognized James for his dedication to serving and uplifting the community both on and off the basketball court. As head coach of the CRC men's basketball program, James has established himself as a mentor, leader, and advocate for student-athletes, helping young people achieve success academically, athletically, and personally.
Hosted under the theme "Black Wall Street Experience," this year's festival focused on economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, community ownership, and creating pathways for future generations. The event featured local vendors, live entertainment, educational programming, the Decades of Wisdom celebration honoring community members and Community Impact Awards recognizing individuals who have made a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
James was among those honored for his continued commitment to community engagement and positive leadership throughout the Sacramento region.
"It's always great to be recognized in any capacity, but when it comes from your community and people that look like you, it means that much more," James said. "It is an honor and a privilege to be an honoree during such a meaningful celebration, Juneteenth."
Since taking over the CRC men's basketball program, James has been committed to developing student-athletes beyond the game, emphasizing education, character development, leadership, and community involvement. His impact extends beyond wins and losses, as he continues to serve as a role model for young people throughout the region.
The Juneteenth Festival's Community Impact Awards celebrate individuals whose work exemplifies service, leadership, and a commitment to strengthening their communities. James' recognition reflects the positive influence he has made through coaching, mentorship, and his dedication to empowering others.
Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States and serves as a celebration of freedom, resilience, culture, and progress. Events such as Elk Grove's Juneteenth Festival continue to honor that legacy while highlighting community leaders who are helping shape a brighter future.
For James, the recognition represents not only a personal honor but also a reflection of the values of service, leadership, and giving back to the community that he strives to instill in his student-athletes every day.
