Sacramento, Calif. – On a cold and foggy Saturday night, the perennial playoff contenders #11 seed CRC Lady Hawks traveled to the new upstart #6 seed Folsom Lake Falcons. The night was foreboding and the enthusiasm of the FLC players to win their first playoff game was apparent. The skill on the field was astounding.
Both teams had excellent ability, both goalkeepers worthy of spectacular saves and both teams launching attacks on each other's goals. The FLC Falcons hit the crossbar early on to spark motivation in our Hawks. Soon thereafter, star freshmen Kate Burkhart, received a free kick from inside the CRC half from fellow freshmen Kelsey Jantzen, Burkhart then dribbled in from the left side and made a move past the Folsom goalkeeper leaving a tough angle on the goal. With a couple of defenders guarding the goal she fired a hard low shot past everyone into the side net Horrrayyy!!......
The contest from then on was a battle at fevered pitch. Despite the fog decidedly making appearances on each side of the field making it hard to see the ball both teams continued the intensity throughout the entire match. With little time remaining, the FLC Falcons were trying very hard to tie. In the last minute, an FLC early cross goes from the right side of the field to the opposite post, where a shot is taken. Everyone gasped, this was FLC's last chance to score…… through the fog, we see CRC Keeper, Anna Brown, rise up with the ball neatly tucked into her arms. Whistle blows. CRC prevails. New rivalry begins.
CRC Head Coach Cesar Plasencia says "This is a great character win! Very proud of our girls!"
CRC senior Captain Korie Martin says "Despite the tremendous energy Folsom brought our team was able to stay calm and play soccer despite the hecka fog. It was great atmosphere with both sides of fans being loud and into the game, and helped us to keep our energy and intensity!!!"
